Hazards

  • Strong consistent NE trade winds can create choppy conditions and sudden wind gusts requiring attentive control
  • Rocky outcrops and shallow reefs near Baia das Gates demand careful navigation and local knowledge
  • Limited rescue infrastructure in remote Cape Verde location necessitates self-sufficiency and buddy system
  • Ocean currents and undertow common to Atlantic-facing Cape Verde shores require strong swimming ability

What that means for you

  • Reef booties recommended at low tide
  • Walk gear out — don't drag downwind across rocks
  • Strong current — walk back upwind, don't body-drag down
  • No riding in marked swim areas
  • Mind your fins and lines in standing-depth water

Amenities

  • Basic local guesthouses and small restaurants in nearby Sao Vicente town
  • Equipment rental and repair services available through established kite schools
  • Fresh water and supplies accessible in Porto Grande nearby

Local tips

Wind is reliable 317 days yearly making this an excellent destination for progression and skill building. Plan visits during Mar-Jun for peak conditions, and always check local weather alerts and ocean conditions with local guides before sessions.

Launch & beach

The flat water bay offers ideal beginner launching conditions with consistent NE winds and protected waters. Sandy beach areas provide easy water entry, though check tide levels and avoid rocky zones during launch.

Local etiquette

Respect local fishermen and their nets, particularly in mornings and evenings. Keep clear of populated beach areas and communicate with other riders given the remote nature of the spot.

What to wear

Water temperature averages 22-24°C year-round; a thin 2-3mm wetsuit or rash guard provides sun protection and minor thermal insulation. Quick-dry clothing handles the tropical climate and strong sun exposure.

What to pack

Kite sizes

  • 14–17 mlight wind, under 14 kn
  • 11–14 mtypical sessions, 14–22 kn
  • 8–10 mstrong days, 20–28 kn

Boards

  • Twintip — universal, bring one

What to wear (by climate)

In the water
Boardshorts or bikini with a rashguard or sun shirt.
On land
Light cotton; pack a rain jacket if the season overlaps rains.

Derived from the spot's latitude (tropical zone) and current season.

Right of way & manners

  1. 1Rider entering the water has right of way over riders coming in.
  2. 2Upwind rider gives way — keep your kite high when passing downwind riders low.
  3. 3Starboard tack (right hand forward) has priority when crossing.
  4. 4Overtaking rider keeps clear of the slower rider's line.
  5. 5Wave riding: the rider on the wave owns it — don't drop in.

Spot guide

The Experience

Sao Vicente's bay gets wind 317 days a year. NE trades funnel in consistently—you're not chasing forecasts here, you're managing intensity. The protected bay runs flat, which means you can drill transitions without fighting chop. Venture toward Baia das Gates and the Atlantic's rougher side appears: shallow reefs and rocky zones that demand local knowledge.

Wind & Conditions

Sixteen knots average is steadier than it sounds. The NE trades pipe in with metronomic regularity, mostly NNE through ENE. Gust lines can spike suddenly. March through June peaks, but pick any three months and you'll get consistent bluebird windows.

Water & Hazards

Cold. Atlantic-facing, remote, no thermal relief. Bring a hood. Stronger concern: currents and undertow are real. You need to be a capable swimmer—not "pretty good," actually capable.

The reef and rocky areas near Baia das Gates aren't features to play around. Know their locations before entering water. Local guides aren't optional. You'll navigate around these zones, not through them.

Who It's For

Flat water makes this genuinely beginner-friendly for progression. But you need self-sufficiency first. Rescue infrastructure is minimal and distant. Come with a crew, a solid plan, and the ability to self-rescue.

Intermediate riders come here to build reflex control. The wind's consistency means you're learning your kite, not that day's conditions.

Logistics

Guesthouses and small restaurants in town. Established kite schools with rentals and repair. Basic supplies at Porto Grande. No frills—functional only.
