Hazards

  • Strong currents and tidal flows common in the Outer Banks area
  • Shallow water and sandbars requiring awareness of depth changes
  • Occasional boat traffic in the sound waters
  • Weather can change rapidly; always check forecasts before heading out

What that means for you

  • Strong current — walk back upwind, don't body-drag down
  • Watch for moored boats and marked channels
  • Mind your fins and lines in standing-depth water

Amenities

  • Nearby shops and restaurants in Hatteras village
  • Parking areas at the Second Turnout access point
  • Local kitesurfing schools and rental shops
  • Beach facilities including restrooms and picnic areas

Local tips

This spot gets phenomenal wind (280 days/year) and is perfect for skill progression with minimal crowds outside peak summer. Plan your trip for the shoulder seasons (Mar-May, Sep-Nov) for ideal wind, fewer tourists, and comfortable water temperatures.

Launch & beach

The flat water sound-side conditions make launches straightforward from the sandy beach. Northeast and north winds are ideal for this orientation, allowing easy launching with consistent conditions.

Local etiquette

Respect other water users including fishermen and boaters common in these waters. Stay aware of other kiters and maintain safe distances, especially in the beginner-friendly flat water zone.

What to wear

Winter months (Dec-Feb) require a 5mm wetsuit or thicker; spring/fall (Mar-May, Sep-Nov) work well with 3-4mm; summer months can be handled with a 2mm or rash guard. Water temperatures range from 50°F in winter to 75°F in summer.

What to pack

Kite sizes

  • 14–17 mlight wind, under 14 kn
  • 11–14 mtypical sessions, 14–22 kn
  • 8–10 mstrong days, 20–28 kn

Boards

  • Twintip — universal, bring one

What to wear (by climate)

In the water
3/2 mm full wetsuit.
On land
Hoody and jacket; long pants in the evening.

Derived from the spot's latitude (temperate zone) and current season.

Right of way & manners

  1. 1Rider entering the water has right of way over riders coming in.
  2. 2Upwind rider gives way — keep your kite high when passing downwind riders low.
  3. 3Starboard tack (right hand forward) has priority when crossing.
  4. 4Overtaking rider keeps clear of the slower rider's line.
  5. 5Wave riding: the rider on the wave owns it — don't drop in.

Spot guide

The Experience

You're launching from sand into Pamlico Sound with the Outer Banks barrier islands behind you. Flat water. Consistent wind. No reef, no rocks—just conditions that let you work. Second Turnout isn't pretty. It's functional. That's why it works.

Wind & Conditions

280 windy days a year. Northeast and north winds work best; southwest comes through too but changes your approach. Average 16.4 knots means steady progression without hunting for one magic day a month. October through May is prime. Summer flats out.

Water

Mirror-flat sound-side conditions. Expect shallow water and shifting sandbars—know the tide before you launch. Currents run through here; they're manageable but real. Boat traffic is light compared to busy inlets. Water's cold November through March (bring a suit). Summer's swimmable without one.

Who Rides Here

Beginners use easy launches and forgiving conditions. Intermediate kiters dial technique on glass. Advanced riders work tricks without chop. This is a training ground, not a party spot. You'll share water with serious kiters.

What You'll Find

Hatteras village has food and shops 20 minutes away. The turnout has parking and beach access. Plan a week during wind season, not a weekend trip. Summer brings tourists; shoulder seasons give breathing room.
