Hazards

  • Shallow water and mudflats at low tide require careful navigation and awareness of tide times
  • Boat traffic in this busy waterway demands constant vigilance and predictable positioning
  • Cold water temperatures increase hypothermia risk, especially in winter months
  • Variable wind conditions and thermal effects from nearby land can create gusty, unpredictable patterns

What that means for you

  • Watch for moored boats and marked channels
  • Mind your fins and lines in standing-depth water

Amenities

  • Kitesurfing schools and rental shops at Brouwersdam beach
  • Parking facilities and beach access near the launch area
  • Local restaurants and cafes within walking distance of the beach
  • Facilities at nearby marinas and water sports centers

Local tips

Check tide tables before sessions as the shallow water and extensive mudflats significantly impact usable launch areas. This spot offers consistent wind with 167+ windy days annually, making it excellent for building skills regardless of season.

Launch & beach

The flat water and sandy beach provide ideal beginner launch conditions, though you must time your session with tidal cycles to avoid mudflats. Southwest to westerly winds work best for launching from this exposed location.

Local etiquette

Stay clear of commercial boat channels and respect other water users; coordinate with fellow kiteboarders to maintain safe spacing in this busy recreational area. Always yield to larger vessels and maintain predictable movement.

What to wear

A 5/4mm wetsuit is essential year-round due to cold North Sea water temperatures; upgrade to 6/5mm for winter months (December-February). Consider a hooded vest for additional warmth during extended sessions.

What to pack

Kite sizes

  • 14–17 mlight wind, under 14 kn
  • 11–14 mtypical sessions, 14–22 kn

Boards

  • Twintip — universal, bring one
  • Hydrofoil — light-wind spot, rideable from ~10 kn

What to wear (by climate)

In the water
4/3 mm full wetsuit with boots.
On land
Insulated jacket and beanie — layer up.

Derived from the spot's latitude (cold-temperate zone) and current season.

Right of way & manners

  1. 1Rider entering the water has right of way over riders coming in.
  2. 2Upwind rider gives way — keep your kite high when passing downwind riders low.
  3. 3Starboard tack (right hand forward) has priority when crossing.
  4. 4Overtaking rider keeps clear of the slower rider's line.
  5. 5Wave riding: the rider on the wave owns it — don't drop in.

Spot guide

The Experience

Brouwersdam is a working waterway, not a resort. You get consistent wind and genuinely flat water—rare in Europe. The tradeoff is sharing space with ferries, barges, and commercial traffic that won't stop for you. Low tide shrinks your usable launch zone. High tide opens it up. Miss the tide window and you're walking.

Wind & Conditions

Southwesterly to westerly winds average 12 knots with thermal effects that shift patterns between morning and afternoon. Summer heating creates gustiness; don't assume a calm dawn forecast holds through the session. Rideable year-round, but winter conditions are colder, not windier. Consistency matters more than power here.

Water

Flat water makes this a progression machine—you can dial technique without fighting chop. Shallowness keeps it smooth but demands tide awareness. Winter water (November–March) requires a hood and booties; hypothermia risk is real, not theoretical.

Boat traffic is constant. Stay predictable, stay visible, stay out of the main channel. You can't zone out.

Who It's For

Intermediate kiters drilling technique and building consistency. Not for adrenaline seekers. Cold-water tolerance and tide management are non-negotiable.

Infrastructure

Schools, rentals, parking, and cafes nearby. Proper water sports hub with marina facilities.
