Hazards

  • Choppy ocean conditions with strong currents and occasional undertows
  • Shallow reef areas and rocks near Tulubhan Beach requiring careful navigation
  • Heavy tourist boat traffic during peak season
  • Sudden wind shifts and gusts due to nearby island topography

What that means for you

  • Reef booties recommended at low tide
  • Walk gear out — don't drag downwind across rocks
  • Strong current — walk back upwind, don't body-drag down
  • Watch for moored boats and marked channels
  • Mind your fins and lines in standing-depth water

Amenities

  • Beach resorts and hotels within walking distance offering equipment rentals
  • Local restaurants and bars along the beach
  • Kite schools and rental shops catering to tourists
  • Basic medical facilities in nearby Boracay town

Local tips

Best conditions occur during February-April and November-December dry seasons when wind is more consistent. Check local conditions at nearby resorts and respect monsoon periods when wind becomes unreliable.

Launch & beach

Launch from the beach during NE/ENE wind conditions which are most consistent. The choppy ocean conditions require careful entry; wade through shallow water and launch where wave action is manageable.

Local etiquette

Respect the busy tourist areas and avoid launching near swimmers and snorkelers. Coordinate with other kiters as the spot can get crowded during peak season months.

What to wear

A 2-3mm wetsuit is sufficient year-round given the tropical location, though many kiters use just boardshorts during warmer months. Sun protection and a rash guard are essential for UV exposure.

What to pack

Kite sizes

  • 14–17 mlight wind, under 14 kn
  • 11–14 mtypical sessions, 14–22 kn

Boards

  • Twintip — universal, bring one
  • Hydrofoil — light-wind spot, rideable from ~10 kn

What to wear (by climate)

In the water
Boardshorts or bikini with a rashguard or sun shirt.
On land
Light cotton; pack a rain jacket if the season overlaps rains.

Derived from the spot's latitude (tropical zone) and current season.

Right of way & manners

  1. 1Rider entering the water has right of way over riders coming in.
  2. 2Upwind rider gives way — keep your kite high when passing downwind riders low.
  3. 3Starboard tack (right hand forward) has priority when crossing.
  4. 4Overtaking rider keeps clear of the slower rider's line.
  5. 5Wave riding: the rider on the wave owns it — don't drop in.

Spot guide

The Experience

Tulubhan Beach is a working tourist zone. You get solid wind windows and resort infrastructure, but you're sharing breaks with speedboats, resort guests, and mixed-ability kiters. The first 50m is ankle-to-knee water; launching here requires precision. NE trades funnel through island topography, creating both your best days and sudden, hard gusts.

Wind & Conditions

NE/ENE dominates Feb–Apr and Nov–Dec. The 138 windy days per year sound reliable until you check the 11.9-knot average—it masks wild variance. February–April is steadiest; November–December works. Everything else is unpredictable. Wind shifts fast due to island shape. Monsoon season (May–Oct) is weak and sketchy; skip it.

Water & Hazards

Expect choppy, lumpy water year-round. Reef and rock formations near Tulubhan demand precise launch angles. Current runs hard depending on tide and season. Boat traffic peaks midday—launch early or late. Heavy undertow exists here; it's a real hazard, not background noise.

Who Should Go

Intermediate minimum. You need confident self-rescue, reef awareness, and current management. Beginners can take lessons but won't cruise—you'll get worked. Experienced kiters will find it technically solid but not extreme.

Logistics

Full tourist town. Resorts rent gear. Bars, restaurants, medical care nearby. The kite community is transient travelers, not local regulars.
