Hazards

  • Choppy ocean conditions with strong currents around Block Island
  • Shallow rocky areas and reefs near shore require careful navigation
  • Cold Atlantic water with risk of hypothermia, especially in winter months
  • Ferry traffic and recreational boats in the area

What that means for you

  • Reef booties recommended at low tide
  • Walk gear out — don't drag downwind across rocks
  • Strong current — walk back upwind, don't body-drag down
  • Watch for moored boats and marked channels
  • Mind your fins and lines in standing-depth water

Amenities

  • Nearby shops and restaurants in Block Island village
  • Beach access with parking facilities at Mansion Beach
  • Local accommodations including hotels and vacation rentals
  • Seasonal tourist services and fuel stations

Local tips

Block Island experiences 281 windy days annually, making it exceptionally reliable. Check local weather forecasts and ferry schedules before visiting, as ocean conditions can change rapidly.

Launch & beach

Mansion Beach offers good sandy launch access, though choppy ocean swells require experience in variable conditions. SW to W wind directions provide optimal offshore/sideshore flows for launching.

Local etiquette

Respect the popular tourist beach environment and stay aware of swimmers and other water users. Keep sessions coordinated with other kiters to avoid collision risks in choppy waters.

What to wear

A 4/3mm or 5/4mm wetsuit is essential year-round due to cold Atlantic temperatures, with 6/5mm recommended for winter months (Nov-Mar). Gloves and booties are highly advisable.

What to pack

Kite sizes

  • 14–17 mlight wind, under 14 kn
  • 11–14 mtypical sessions, 14–22 kn
  • 8–10 mstrong days, 20–28 kn

Boards

  • Twintip — universal, bring one

What to wear (by climate)

In the water
3/2 mm full wetsuit.
On land
Hoody and jacket; long pants in the evening.

Derived from the spot's latitude (temperate zone) and current season.

Right of way & manners

  1. 1Rider entering the water has right of way over riders coming in.
  2. 2Upwind rider gives way — keep your kite high when passing downwind riders low.
  3. 3Starboard tack (right hand forward) has priority when crossing.
  4. 4Overtaking rider keeps clear of the slower rider's line.
  5. 5Wave riding: the rider on the wave owns it — don't drop in.

Spot guide

The Experience

Block Island sits exposed in the sound with nothing to break the Atlantic's mood. You get decent sandy launch at Mansion Beach, but the water stays choppy baseline—not occasional, constant. SW to W winds work best for launching without immediate punishment, but you're still in genuine ocean texture.

Wind & Conditions

281 windy days annually. Most East Coast spots are flat when Block Island runs. Prime season October through May, scattered rideable wind summer too. Wind rotates SW, WSW, SSW, WNW, W—typical Atlantic. Average 16.5 knots plays heavier because chop adds real bite. Glassy light-wind sessions don't happen here.

The Water

Cold Atlantic water. Winter requires proper protection or hypothermia risk is real. Shallow reefs and rocky areas close to shore demand navigation awareness before launch. Strong, unpredictable currents. Ferry traffic adds complexity. You can't zone out and drift—the water demands constant attention.

Who It's For

Intermediate minimum. Choppy water punishes sloppy technique. Cold-water management is non-negotiable. East Coasters who know Atlantic conditions will thrive. Warm-water flatwater kiters will get worked. The upside: it sharpens your skills fast.

Getting There

Block Island village has shops, restaurants, lodging. Mansion Beach has parking. Ferry schedules dictate access and water state. It's a functional East Coast destination with reliable wind, no crowds, no tropical vibes.
