Lokale Tipps

Fehmarn is one of Germany's premier flat-water spots with excellent consistency—197 windy days annually means frequent sessions. Check tide tables before going out as shallow areas and currents vary significantly with tidal cycles.

Einstieg & Strand

The flat water and sandy/shallow beach allow easy ground launches for beginners. West and east winds provide consistent conditions; enter from the beach and be mindful of shallow areas extending 100+ meters offshore.

Lokale Regeln

Respect the shared space with windsurfers and other water users; stay clear of shipping lanes and established courses. Communicate with other riders and maintain a consistent upwind/downwind pattern.

Was anziehen

Wear a 4/3mm or 5/3mm wetsuit year-round as Baltic Sea water rarely exceeds 15°C; thicker protection (6mm) is recommended for winter sessions from November through March.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Fehmarn is a progression engine. You get 197 windy days annually, which means sessions happen when other European spots flatline. The Fehmarn Belt funnels wind consistently enough that you spend time actually riding instead of sitting on the beach.

Water stays choppy but manageable. The sandy bottom and shallow approach let you ground start in knee-deep water. No wrestling boards through shore break—just walk out and launch.

Wind & Conditions

Average 12.6 knots doesn't sound impressive until you realize how often you'll actually get it. Wind spreads across all seasons, with stronger periods in October, March, May, September, and winter months. West and northwest dominate; east winds also cycle through regularly.

Expect plenty of marginal 10-knot sessions. Bring mid-range kit.

Water & Hazards

Shallow for 100+ meters out. Seagrass wraps your board seasonally—watch foot placement on retreat. Water stays cold year-round; plan for 5/3mm minimum.

Tidal current in the Belt pushes harder than expected. Check slack water timing before sessions. Spring tides create noticeable drift.

Ferry traffic runs to Denmark. Stay aware of shipping lanes but you're not threading between container ships.

Who It's For

Beginners and intermediates. Flat water and wind consistency mean actual progression instead of fighting conditions. Advanced riders seeking waves or swell will find nothing here.

The Scene

Gold has rental shops, schools, restaurants near the beach. Locals drive the infrastructure—this is a working spot, not a resort town.

Wind typically picks up afternoons. Mornings quiet; 4 PM onward you'll see activity. Consistent enough to build a local rotation.
