Gefahren

  • Shallow flat water with potential sandbars and shorebreak, requiring careful navigation
  • Atlantic swell exposure can create choppy conditions despite the flat-water designation
  • Low average wind speed (8.4 kts) means many days are marginal or undoable

Was das für dich heißt

  • Shorebreak beim Start und Landen timen
  • Im Stehbereich auf Finnen und Leinen achten

Ausstattung

  • Beach facilities and accommodations in the nearby coastal town of Vieux-Boucau
  • Local kitesurfing schools and equipment rental shops
  • Restaurants and cafés along the beachfront promenade

Lokale Tipps

This is an excellent beginner spot with forgiving flat water, but plan visits during the strongest wind months (Jan-May, Nov) for consistency. Check local tide charts as sandbars shift seasonally.

Einstieg & Strand

Launch from the sandy beach in light, steady W-NW winds. The flat-water lagoon area is ideal for beginners, though you'll need consistent 10+ knots of wind for most conditions.

Lokale Regeln

Respect the marked beach zones and share space with swimmers and other water sports users. Keep downwind riders clear of launching areas.

Was anziehen

A 3/2mm wetsuit is suitable for winter months (Jan-Mar), while summer sessions may only require a rashguard. Water temperatures range from 8°C in winter to 16°C in summer.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Flat lagoon water with no closeouts or surprise whitewater. Shallow enough that you're never far from your board. For learning harness work and bar pressure, this delivers.

The downside is obvious: 8.4 knots average means many days you're stuck between kite sizes. Underpowered on 17m, overpowered on 19m. You need consistent 10+ knots minimum to actually ride.

Wind & Conditions

Westerlies (W, WNW, WSW) are strongest January through May and again in November—those are your money months. Outside that window, sessions dry up fast.

Atlantic swell exposure creates chop layered over the flat base. Sandbars shift seasonally; low tide can expose shallow launch zones. Check tide tables before going.

The Water

Shallow and manageable most days, which is why beginners progress here. Winter water needs a 5/3 wetsuit minimum.

Don't mistake shallow for safe. Sandbars create shorebreak on big Atlantic swell days, and you can get worked in ankle-deep water if storms pump. Respect the dynamics.

Who It's For

Beginners wanting calm progression without reef or dumping beach break. Intermediate kiters using it as off-season flatwater training.

Not for anyone chasing reliable wind or powered sessions. Skip it if you need 15+ knots most days.

The Scene

Actual French coastal town with kiteschools, rentals, restaurants, and cafés. Infrastructure exists. Not a remote pilgrimage spot.
