Lokale Tipps
This is an extremely remote spot with limited infrastructure—bring all necessary supplies, spare parts, and consider hiring a local guide familiar with currents and conditions. Summer monsoon (Jun-Sep) offers the most consistent winds.
Einstieg & Strand
Flat water conditions make this ideal for beginners, but launching depends on beach access and spit geography. South and northeast winds dominate, so scout launch zones aligned with prevailing wind directions.
Lokale Regeln
Respect local fishing communities and avoid interfering with traditional boats and nets. Keep a safe distance from other water users given the remote setting.
Was anziehen
A lightweight 3mm or 2mm wetsuit works for most months; water temperature is warm year-round in this equatorial location. Sun protection is essential.

Spot-Guide
The Reality
The Spit is a remote sandbar kite mission for people who can handle isolation and logistics. You get flat water and reliable wind because of the Horn of Africa monsoon system. You don't get shops, guides, or rescue infrastructure.
Wind
19 knots average, 264 windy days per year. Peak season runs June–September (southwest monsoon). South and northeast winds dominate. Wind is consistent enough to find rideable conditions most months, but spit geometry matters—you need to scout launch zones before committing.
Water Hazards
Flat water masks real problems. Shallow zones and rock outcrops scattered throughout. Strong, unpredictable currents push you further offshore than expected. Coral heads present navigation risks—avoid touching or walking on reef areas. If something breaks or you get in trouble, there's no one coming to help you.
What You Actually Need
"Beginner" here means flat-water skills, not "casual." You need to read currents, understand tides, and operate independently. Bring spare parts, repair supplies, food, water. Hire a local guide familiar with spit behavior—this isn't optional.
Logistics
Nearest town is Hafun. From there, beach access to the spit requires local knowledge and tide awareness. Plan to scout for a day before you ride. Consistency is real. Trade-off is complete isolation.
