Gefahren

  • Choppy ocean conditions with potential sharp coral reefs and shallow areas near shore
  • Strong SE trade winds can create steep chop; watch for sudden wind shifts from multiple directions
  • Tropical currents and occasional sea urchins in shallow water
  • Limited visibility in murky conditions during heavy swell periods

Was das für dich heißt

  • Riffschuhe bei Ebbe empfohlen
  • Starke Strömung — upwind zurücklaufen, nicht abtreiben lassen
  • Im Stehbereich auf Finnen und Leinen achten

Ausstattung

  • Basic beach access and local kite schools in populated areas
  • Limited food and water vendors; bring supplies from town
  • Accommodation options in nearby Nouméa, about 40km away
  • Equipment rental shops in main tourist areas

Lokale Tipps

Tenia receives excellent wind year-round with 262+ windy days annually, making it a reliable destination. Check tide and swell forecasts before sessions as choppy conditions vary significantly with weather patterns.

Einstieg & Strand

Launch from sandy/rocky beach areas during SE to SSE winds for most consistent conditions. Choppy water makes entry challenging; wade carefully through shallow coral zones and time your launch between wave sets.

Lokale Regeln

Respect local marine reserves and reef boundaries; stay aware of other water users including fishermen. Keep a safe distance from swimmers and share the water respectfully with other kiters.

Was anziehen

Wear a 2-3mm spring suit year-round as water temperatures stay warm (24-27°C); UV protection shirt recommended due to intense tropical sun. Consider reef booties for sharp coral protection.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Tenia is a wind-reliable spot, not a scenic one. SE trades blow 262 days a year—you won't drive back empty-handed often. The tradeoff: choppy ocean and shallow coral zones that require active navigation. This is intermediate territory where you work for your session.

Launch & Entry

Shallow coral studded with sand demands respect. Wade slowly. Time entries between wave sets. SE and SSE winds offer the most consistent launch windows; WNW, W, and ESE are less reliable.

Wind & Water

Average 16.2 knots from consistent SE trades. Trade wind chop in tropical water is steep and short-period. Swell and tide forecasts matter—visibility drops during bigger swells. Wind is steady; the ocean's response to it is relentless.

Shallow reefs and strong currents are genuine hazards. Sea urchins inhabit shallow areas. Launch in shallow water, then move to deeper zones for your session. Don't ride in reef areas. Tidal range affects passage depth significantly.

Who This Is For

Solid body dragging skills required. You need judgment to bail when conditions exceed your level. Expect basic amenities—Nouméa is 40km away. Food and water are limited near the beach; bring supplies. Gear rental in tourist areas exists but isn't guaranteed reliable. Bring your own kit.

Looking for warm-water cruising? Go elsewhere. Want consistent wind year-round? Tenia delivers.
