Expect gray water, choppy texture, relentless wind. No glass-offs. No warm thermals. Westerland has schools and rentals; Sylt itself is a working island with a lean kiting infrastructure.
Wind & Conditions
240 windy days annually is legitimate. SW to W winds average 14 knots—workable but demanding in chop. Spring and autumn are most consistent. Winter brings wind but cold water and early dark.
Light-wind sessions here are punishment. The chop and variable swell make marginal-condition launches exhausting. You need power to justify the effort.

North Sea tides are significant. Check timing before you go—currents will push you around. Shallow water around the tetrapoden traps and churns.
The structures are visible but demand constant positioning awareness, especially in variable light. Launch from sand north of the main field. Stay clear on the way out and in.
