Lokale Tipps

Plan visits during peak wind season (May-September, December-January) when conditions are most consistent. Socotra's isolation demands self-sufficiency; arrange logistics and local contacts well in advance.

Einstieg & Strand

Launch from sandy areas during NE or SW wind directions for cleanest conditions; avoid rocky sections. Choppy water requires careful entry and exit planning, especially in lighter wind days.

Lokale Regeln

Respect local fishing activities and traditional maritime practices. Coordinate with local guides or authorities before launching, as this is a remote and culturally sensitive area.

Was anziehen

Wear a light 2-3mm wetsuit year-round for sun and minor thermal protection; water temperatures remain warm (24-28°C) throughout the year.

Spot-Guide

The Reality

Socotra isn't a progression spot or a casual trip. You're going for wind consistency and solitude, and you're paying for both with logistics and isolation. No rental shop. No instructor. No fallback.

Monsoonal wind runs hard May–September and again December–January. Outside those windows, you're gambling. The 187 windy days and 18.5-knot average look solid on paper until you're in it—sudden gusts and shifts are the monsoon signature, and they'll catch you unprepared.

Wind & Water

NE and SW wind corridors produce the cleanest launches. Other directions bring choppy, inconsistent conditions. Peak season is May–September.

Water is the serious constraint. Strong, unpredictable currents. Shallow reef and rocky bottom throughout. Careless entries and exits will shred your board and your skin. This isn't a place to learn reef awareness—you need it before you arrive. Scout launch zones and exit routes before you commit. Plan your session around swell and current behavior, not just wind.

Medical evacuation is your only option for a real injury. Overpowered sessions and calculated risk-taking don't live here.

What You Need

Intermediate+ with genuine self-reliance. You rig in wind, read unfamiliar water, manage your own safety. Bring food, water, and spare gear. Guesthouses are basic. Plan for functional travel, not resort comfort.

Respect the reefs—navigate around them, protect them. Respect the currents and the isolation. Socotra works if you show up prepared and honest about the trade-offs.
