Socotra Island / Hulaf, Yemen

14.8kts

SSW · Windsaison

Socotra delivers consistent trade winds on one of Earth's most isolated islands. Flat water, strong currents, and zero infrastructure mean this isn't a beginner spot despite the label.

Lokale Tipps

Ensure you have travel permits for Yemen and adequate supplies, as Socotra is extremely remote with limited services. Plan trips during dry season months (Jun-Sep) for most reliable winds and accessibility.

Einstieg & Strand

Launches are straightforward from flat water conditions with consistent trade winds. SSW and ENE winds dominate, providing reliable conditions across most seasons with sandy beach access.

Lokale Regeln

This is a remote, rarely-visited spot with minimal kitesurfing activity; respect local fishing communities and obtain necessary permissions before launching. Be self-sufficient and avoid interfering with traditional maritime activities.

Was anziehen

Wear minimal coverage (rash guard or light wetsuit) during warm months (Jun-Sep) and water temps of 25-28°C; add light neoprene in cooler months (Dec-Feb) when temps drop to 20-23°C. Sun protection is critical year-round.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Socotra has no shops, schools, or rescue infrastructure. What it has: reliable trade winds year-round and genuinely remote flat water. You'll need permits, full logistics planning, and serious self-sufficiency before you go.

Wind & Conditions

152 windy days annually. Peak window is June–September (monsoonal SW winds), with consistent ENE trades in winter and spring. Average 14.8 knots keeps sessions manageable without being underpowered. Wind shows up predictably, but Indian Ocean weather shifts fast.

The Water

Flat surface hides dangerous currents and unpredictable swell wraps from the Indian Ocean. Shallow areas have coral and sharp rock—you navigate around the reef, not on it. Medical help doesn't exist. Current is the real hazard here, not wave size.

Who It's For

You need solid self-rescue skills and current-reading ability. The "Beginner" tag only applies to wave size. Isolation is total. Guesthouses are basic, food options minimal. Dry season (June–Sept) is your only realistic window.

Before You Go

Yemen's security situation changes frequently—verify entry requirements directly with your government before booking anything. Bring everything you might need. Sun exposure is extreme despite wind. This spot rewards preparation and penalizes shortcuts.
