Winter wind factory on the Jersey coast. WNW offshores make it rideable, but strong currents and shifting sandbars demand solid water-reading skills.

Lokale Tipps

Winter and early spring (Jan-Apr) offer the most reliable wind with 92 windy days annually. Check local beach advisories before each session as conditions can change rapidly in New Jersey's dynamic coastal environment.

Einstieg & Strand

Launch from the beach with care during choppy conditions; WNW and NW winds provide the most consistent offshore flow. Watch for shallow water near shore and plan your entry angle to avoid turbulent breaks.

Lokale Regeln

Respect the busy beach environment by launching during off-peak hours when possible and staying clear of swimmers. Communicate with other water users and follow local beach regulations regarding water sports zones.

Was anziehen

A 4/3mm or 5/4mm wetsuit is essential year-round; water temperatures rarely exceed 70°F. Winter months (Jan-Apr) require thicker protection, especially for extended sessions.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Launch from 23rd Ave with the boardwalk behind you and wind pushing offshore. Atlantic chop stacks steep and unforgiving—this isn't a scenic break. You're here for the winter consistency, the readable conditions, and sessions where technique matters more than views.

Wind & Conditions

January through April delivers the goods. WNW and NW winds come offshore and clean things up. Average 11.1 knots means some days are marginal, others solid. You need to pick your windows. S and W flows show up but don't have the same shape. March–April is most consistent.

The Water

Strong currents run this coast. Sandbars shift constantly, creating choppy shallows near shore that funnel water aggressively. Plan your entry to avoid the worst turbulence. Winter water demands booties and a hood. Your exit matters as much as your launch—the shallows come up fast and irregular.

Who It's For

Intermediate minimum. You need solid board control in chop and the ability to read currents. This spot won't be forgiving to beginners. If you want reliable winter sessions without a long drive, it works. Don't come for flat-water progression.

The Scene

Lifeguards and first aid in peak season. Beach parking exists. Boardwalk is walkable. Winter is quieter; summer brings swimmers. Maritime traffic nearby means you stay aware of your position. It's a working beach, not remote or exclusive.
