Lokale Tipps

Wind is consistent 301 days yearly making this a reliable spot; check local tide times as they significantly affect launch zones and current strength. Winter months (Jan-Mar) offer the most reliable strong winds but coldest conditions.

Einstieg & Strand

Launch from the sandy sections avoiding rocks; SSW to W winds provide consistent offshore and sideshore conditions. Choppy water demands careful entry and exit positioning.

Lokale Regeln

Share the beach respectfully with swimmers and other water sports users; check local guidelines during peak summer season when crowds increase.

Was anziehen

5/4mm or 6/5mm wetsuits essential year-round; 7mm recommended November through March when water temps drop to 8-10°C. Consider booties for rocky beach entry.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Portglash is consistency above all else. You get wind nearly every day of the year, but the Atlantic charges in cold and choppy. The beach splits between sand and rocky sections—launch from sand only.

For intermediate riders chasing frequent sessions over comfort, this works. 301 windy days annually means you can plan around wind, not around the calendar. Most days sit around 20 knots, which suits intermediate progression without the punishment of bigger Atlantic days. Winter (Jan–Mar) is strongest but requires 5–6mm wetsuits minimum. Water stays cold year-round.

Wind & Conditions

SSW through W winds dominate, providing consistent offshore and sideshore angles. Wind shows up in every month—winter is most reliable, but summer still averages 20+ knots. Tide timing is critical here; it controls launch/exit safety and current strength. Check tidal tables before sessions.

The Water

Atlantic swell plus wind chop creates messy conditions. Rip currents and strong flows are genuine hazards on entry and exit. Shallow reefs and rocky outcrops require careful navigation of the launch zone. Learn the safe path, or the water will teach you expensively.

Parking exists. A nearby village has supplies. Kite schools and shops operate in the wider area, but Portglash itself is bare-bones Irish coast.

Who It's For

Intermediate riders comfortable with cold, choppy water and strong currents. If you live nearby or can base yourself here for weeks, the wind frequency pays off. Beginners lack the water awareness this spot requires. Advanced riders will find playable conditions but nothing that builds new skills.

Get There

Prioritize consistency over comfort. Check tides. Wear thick rubber. Learn the launch zone. Conditions repeat—you'll be back tomorrow.
