Lokale Tipps

Best conditions occur October-February when Atlantic swells and westerly winds align. Check tide charts before sessions as tidal range affects launch difficulty and water state.

Einstieg & Strand

Launch from the beach during incoming tide to avoid sandbars. Westerly and northwesterly winds are most consistent; WSW and SSW winds can create cross-onshore conditions requiring careful positioning.

Lokale Regeln

Respect local swimmers and beach users during peak seasons. Follow French beach regulations and check for any designated kite zones before launching.

Was anziehen

A 4/3mm or 5/3mm wetsuit is essential year-round in the Atlantic; thicker protection (6/5mm) recommended for winter months (Dec-Feb). Water temperatures range from 8°C in winter to 16°C in summer.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Moliet Plage is a proper ocean beach in the Bay of Biscay. Cold water. Shifting sand. Honest wind. Tides aren't background here—they control your session. Launch at the wrong time and sandbars trap you 50m out in shin-deep water.

Wind & Conditions

October through February work. Westerly and northwesterly winds average 8.5 knots when Atlantic swells are running—which is most of winter. About 50 windy days annually, clustered in cooler months. WSW and SSW winds create cross-onshore angles that force you to work positioning or hug the beach edge. Summer is dead.

Water & Hazards

Choppy is baseline. Atlantic swells mean lumpy conditions even on light days; winter storms turn it genuinely rough. Sandbars migrate with tide. Rip currents are present in this high-range tidal environment. Check tide charts before launching—incoming vs. outgoing is the difference between manageable and brutal. Rocky debris and erosion clutter the beach. Scout your launch spot on arrival.

Who It's For

Intermediate minimum. You need wave awareness, ability to read tide and current, and comfort in choppy water. This isn't a technique lagoon. It's where you learn what real ocean conditions demand.

Logistics

Moliet village has beach bars, rental shops, and schools. Parking available. Bring a thick wetsuit and check the tide table before you go.
