Gefahren

  • Choppy ocean conditions with strong currents typical of the Indian Ocean
  • Coral reefs and rocks near shore requiring careful launch and landing zones
  • Sudden wind shifts and thermal effects common in tropical island locations
  • Limited emergency services access in remote bay areas

Was das für dich heißt

  • Riffschuhe bei Ebbe empfohlen
  • Material tragen — nicht über Steine ziehen
  • Starke Strömung — upwind zurücklaufen, nicht abtreiben lassen

Ausstattung

  • Basic beach facilities near Police Bay with local vendor access
  • Nearby accommodation and food options in Mahé's main towns
  • Equipment rental services available in Victoria

Lokale Tipps

Peak wind season runs June-October with the most consistent conditions in July-September. Always check local weather forecasts and tide conditions before launching, as the bay can become crowded during optimal wind windows.

Einstieg & Strand

Launch from the sandy beach area during SE/SSE wind directions when conditions are most stable. Avoid launching during WNW winds when offshore conditions can develop quickly.

Lokale Regeln

Respect local fishing activity and share the bay with other water users. Check local regulations regarding protected marine areas before launching.

Was anziehen

A 2-3mm wetsuit or rashguard is sufficient year-round given tropical water temperatures. Consider UV protection and a cap due to intense equatorial sun exposure.

Vorfahrt & Verhalten

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Police Bay is a grind spot. Glassy mornings don't happen here. What you get: reliable SE/SSE wind and the unfiltered reality of kiting the Indian Ocean. Mahé's leeward position means thermal effects can shift your window fast. Launch when the SE or SSE is steady. WNW wind is offshore and unreliable—skip it.

Wind & Conditions

June–October is the window. July–September is most consistent at 12.9 knots average. That's light on paper but the trades hold. The catch: chop builds quickly and currents run strong, so your drift is real. Winter months (Dec, Jan, May) add windy days but bring thermal noise and less stability. Always check forecast and tide.

Water & Hazards

Coral and rocks line the shore. Scope your launch and landing zone before you paddle out—don't thread reef on entry or exit. Strong currents mean real drift; plan your position accordingly. Emergency services are limited, so self-sufficiency matters. Stay clear of reef entirely.

Who It's For

Intermediate riders comfortable in chop and strong current. You need solid water sense and boat awareness. Not beginner terrain. Not a freestyle training ground. Go for wind consistency, not conditions perfection.

The Scene

Victoria has rentals and beds. Police Bay itself is a working beach with local vendors and basic facilities. Peak windows draw crowds—early launch pays off.
