Lokale Tipps

Best wind days cluster in winter and early spring (Jan-Apr) with 84 wind days annually; plan trips during these months for reliable conditions. Check local beach regulations regarding water sports zones, as NJ beaches have specific designated areas.

Einstieg & Strand

The beach launch is straightforward with sandy access, but choppy ocean conditions require entering at an angle to manage wave action. Best launches occur during WNW to W winds when offshore flow smooths the immediate water near shore.

Lokale Regeln

Respect swimming zones and maintain distance from swimmers and leisure beach users, especially during summer months. Share the water courteously with other water sports and be mindful of busy shipping lanes.

Was anziehen

Winter months (Jan-Apr) require 5/4mm wetsuits as water stays cold; summer sessions can use 3/2mm or thinner suits. Water temps range from low 40s°F in winter to mid-70s°F in summer.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

You're launching off sandy beach on LBI's eastern edge straight into open Atlantic—no lagoon buffer, no excuses. Sandbars near 25th Street churn water into honest chop that rewards clean technique. Angle your entry rather than charging straight out; you'll find rhythm once past the shorebreak.

Winter here runs solid. January through April cluster 84 wind days annually, mostly WNW/W. When it fills in, nearshore water settles enough to work. Expect texture and wind you can trust, not glassy conditions.

Wind & Conditions

10.8 knots average during season, January–February most reliable. WNW dominant, then W and NW. March–April stays solid but choppier. Summer dies completely.

When it's firing, you get 3–4 hour windows of sustained wind, not squall sessions. Plan around February or late March. Random Tuesday forecasts don't cut it here.

Water & Navigation

40s Fahrenheit in winter—5mm suit minimum, hooded vest recommended. Hypothermia is real on extended swims.

Boat traffic peaks summer/weekends. Swimmers use designated zones; know where and stay clear. Sandbars shift, currents run strong. Choppy water kills sightlines. Solo sessions in poor visibility aren't worth it.

Who It's For

Intermediate minimum. You need chop competency, clean entries in turbulent water, and current awareness. If ocean swell and closeout reads come naturally, you'll function here.

The win: reliability during winter when the tri-state flatlines. No 8-hour drive needed.
