Lokale Tipps

The lagoon's 288+ windy days annually make it extremely reliable, especially during Aug-Dec peak season; check local conditions before visiting as equatorial weather can shift quickly.

Einstieg & Strand

The flat water lagoon offers ideal conditions for launching from shallow shores; approach from the ENE/NE wind directions when available for best launch angles and steady conditions.

Lokale Regeln

Respect local fishermen and small boat operators by staying aware of traffic patterns and maintaining safe distances from their work areas.

Was anziehen

A light 2-3mm wetsuit or rash guard is suitable for the warm tropical climate year-round, with sun protection being more critical than thermal insulation.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Flat water, predictable wind, close to São Luís for food and gear. That's the sell. The reality: you're in a freshwater tropical lagoon with poor visibility and seasonal vegetation shifts. Not the Caribbean postcard. It works if you want reliable conditions without the crowds.

Wind & Conditions

288+ windy days annually. August–December is prime. East and northeast winds average 11.5 knots—light but consistent enough for schools to operate. The problem: equatorial weather moves fast. Steady 12 knots can vanish in 30 minutes. Check forecasts before driving out.

The Water

Flat doesn't mean easy. Submerged vegetation, poor visibility, and muddy shallows mean you're picking your way out carefully. Boat traffic and fishing activity are constant hazards—locals use this water daily and have right-of-way. Respect that.

Who It's For

Flat water + accessible wind = good for learning basics. Poor visibility + murky bottom + shared waterway = you need actual situational awareness. Skip this if you want clarity or solitude.

Getting There

Near Santo Amaro do Maranhão, 30 minutes from São Luís where rentals and schools operate. Basic setup: parking, shade, food. It's not developed like Ceará's spots (Cumbuco, Jericoacoara), but functional. The lagoon borders Lençóis Maranhenses, so the landscape has character.
