Gefahren

  • Coral reefs and shallow water obstacles throughout the lagoon require careful navigation and awareness of tide conditions
  • Strong currents can develop in the lagoon channels, especially during tidal changes
  • Limited visibility of underwater hazards in the clear but shallow tropical waters

Was das für dich heißt

  • Riffschuhe bei Ebbe empfohlen
  • Starke Strömung — upwind zurücklaufen, nicht abtreiben lassen
  • Im Stehbereich auf Finnen und Leinen achten

Ausstattung

  • Resort facilities and accommodation on Honeymoon Island with food and refreshment options
  • Boat access and local guides familiar with lagoon conditions
  • Rental equipment available through local operators in Aitutaki

Lokale Tipps

Plan sessions around tides as water depth and current conditions vary significantly throughout the day. The 297 windy days annually make this an exceptionally reliable destination, with June-November offering the most consistent conditions.

Einstieg & Strand

The flat lagoon water and sandy launch areas provide ideal beginner conditions with gentle entry. Launch toward the dominant ESE-E wind direction for consistent offshore breezes.

Lokale Regeln

Respect local fishing areas and avoid launching near traditional fishing grounds. Share the lagoon space with other water users and maintain awareness of boat traffic.

Was anziehen

A light 2-3mm wetsuit or rash guard is sufficient year-round given the warm tropical climate and sunny conditions. Sun protection is essential due to intense equatorial UV exposure.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Honeymoon Island is a sandbar in the middle of Aitutaki's lagoon, and it looks exactly like the screensaver you're imagining. Except here, the trade winds are blowing 15-25 knots across waist-deep water that stretches out in every direction. You take a water taxi from Ootu Beach, set up on the sand, and ride until your arms give out. There's nobody in your way because the lagoon is massive and the government has designated specific kite zones to keep everyone happy.

Wind & Conditions

Trade winds blow ESE to E, cycling in 5-8 day patterns between 10 and 25 knots. The season runs May through October, with August being the most reliable month. When the trades are on, they're steady and clean — none of the gusty thermal nonsense you get on volcanic islands. When they cycle off, you get a couple of flat days to explore the motus. With 297 windy days a year on the stats, odds are firmly in your favour.

The Water

Warm. Clear. Shallow. No wetsuit, no drama. The lagoon has sandy bottom through most of the riding area with coral patches near the edges — stay aware of where the sand ends and the reef starts. The two main zones work differently: Ootu Beach gives you onshore chop and small waves, Honeymoon Island gives you offshore-smooth flat water. Pick your flavour.

Who It's For

Beginners will progress faster here than almost anywhere else — waist-deep water, steady wind, no waves, sandy bottom. IKO-certified instructors run lessons from the kite centre on Honeymoon Island with safety boats on standby. But don't write it off if you're experienced: the flat water is perfect for freestyle, and when the wind pushes into the 20s the downwinders across the lagoon are spectacular.

The Scene

This is remote Pacific island territory. There's one kite school (Wet n Wild, based at Ootu), a handful of resorts, and not much else. That's the point. Sessions end with a swim in water so clear you can see the reef sharks cruising below. Bring spare gear — there's no kite shop on the island.
