Gefahren
- Cold Arctic waters with risk of hypothermia; immediate rescue response critical
- Choppy ocean conditions and strong currents common in this northern fjord area
- Rocky outcrops and shallow areas near Skipholmen island require careful navigation
- Limited daylight hours in winter months despite peak wind season
Was das für dich heißt
- Material tragen — nicht über Steine ziehen
- Starke Strömung — upwind zurücklaufen, nicht abtreiben lassen
- Im Stehbereich auf Finnen und Leinen achten
Ausstattung
- Small coastal village facilities in nearby Tromsø area (30-45 min drive)
- Limited on-site amenities; plan provisions and fuel before arrival
- Parking available near launch area with basic shelter options
Lokale Tipps
Check weather windows carefully; arctic storms develop rapidly and daylight is minimal Nov-Jan. Notify someone of your session plan due to remote location and limited rescue infrastructure.
Einstieg & Strand
Choppy ocean conditions mean gradual water entry is preferable; launch from the beach into prevailing W/WNW winds for smooth offshore flow. Watch for tidal currents affecting launch and landing zones.
Lokale Regeln
Respect local fishing activities common in this region and maintain safe distance from commercial vessels. Coordinate with other kiters given the remote nature and limited riding space.
Was anziehen
5/4mm winter wetsuit minimum year-round with hood, gloves, and booties essential due to Arctic water temperatures (0-8°C). In winter months, layering beneath wetsuit is critical.

Vorfahrt & Verhalten
Spot-Guide
The Experience
You're launching into a Norwegian fjord at 69°N where Atlantic wind hits hard and water temperature demands a 6mm wetsuit minimum. Hillesoy/Skipholmen is unforgiving kiting — no shelter, no crowds, just honest conditions. The beach launch is accessible, but the fjord shows its teeth immediately: choppy water, tidal current, and rocks near Skipholmen island that require navigation awareness.
Wind & Conditions
This spot works because it sits exposed to Atlantic systems. W/WNW winds deliver clean offshore push when they arrive. The 62.5 windy days concentrate Oct-Feb when Arctic pressure systems lock in. The 9.4-knot average masks the real pattern: lulls punctuated by proper gusts. Winter storms develop fast. Forecasts change hourly. Wind window shrinks when it closes — check conditions obsessively.
The Water
Arctic water induces hypothermia in 10-15 minutes if your gear fails. A 6mm is minimum; 7mm hood recommended. Fjord currents are real enough to affect entry and landing. The North Atlantic chop never fully dies. Gradual water entry keeps you footed; rushing the shallows means getting worked.
Who It's For
Intermediate riders with cold-water discipline and honest self-assessment. You need competence in fjord chop and judgment about your limits in extreme conditions. Never solo. Tromsø (30-45 min away) has services; on-site rescue infrastructure is limited. If something goes wrong, you're self-sufficient or waiting. Tell someone onshore your plan.
The Scene
Basic parking exists near launch. Amenities don't — bring provisions. Winter (peak wind season) means twilight or darkness Nov-Jan. That limits visibility but locks in Arctic high pressure, delivering wind consistency most European spots can't match.
