Flat-water lagoon with glass conditions when winds cooperate. Hatteras microclimates demand respect, but fewer kites mean real estate to work with.

Lokale Tipps

The Slick is less crowded than nearby spots, making it ideal for progression; check local wind reports as the cape creates unpredictable microclimates. Plan sessions around tide changes, as shallow areas can become challenging at low tide.

Einstieg & Strand

The Slick offers protected, flat-water launching ideal for beginners with gentle beach access. NE and N winds are most favorable; SW winds can create choppy conditions on the eastern approach.

Lokale Regeln

Respect fishing areas and watch for other water users; stay in designated kitesurfing zones to avoid conflicts with traditional fishing community. Yield to larger vessels and be aware of strong local knowledge among experienced riders.

Was anziehen

Wear a 5mm wetsuit in winter (Nov-Mar) and 3mm in shoulder seasons; summer months allow 1-2mm or rash guards. Water temperature ranges from 45°F in winter to 78°F in summer.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

The Slick is genuine protected water—a lagoon, not a beach break masquerading as one. On good days the surface is mirror-flat. You get clean launches and immediate feedback on your technique. Beach access is easy and parking doesn't require a pre-dawn arrival.

Wind & Conditions

275 windy days annually is solid. NE and N winds work best, funneling across the lagoon predictably. Don't trust the forecast numbers here—Cape Hatteras creates real microclimate shifts. A reported 16 knots can swing 1–2 knots within a session. SW winds push chop into the eastern zones.

Tide swings matter significantly. Low tide restricts depth in shallower areas. High tide opens the flat zones. Check before committing.

Water & Hazards

Winter temps run 40–50°F. Booties and a 5/3 minimum. Strong inlet currents and shifting sandbars are documented issues—stay aware of channel positions. Commercial boat traffic and fishing nets operate in the flat water during season. This isn't a pleasure-cruise zone but activity happens.

Who Rides Here

Beginner-friendly for riders comfortable with variable wind and self-reliant conditions. Local rental shops and schools exist. The actual advantage: fewer kiters means faster progression and no wind-lane gridlock.
