Gefahren
- Strong currents and choppy ocean conditions require solid intermediate skills and awareness
- Shallow water near the ramp can create turbulent, unpredictable wave patterns
- Occasional shallow sandbars and debris from the dynamic Outer Banks environment
- Weather can change rapidly; monitor forecasts as conditions shift frequently
Was das für dich heißt
- Starke Strömung — upwind zurücklaufen, nicht abtreiben lassen
- Im Stehbereich auf Finnen und Leinen achten
Ausstattung
- Ramp 27 provides vehicle access and direct water entry
- Nearby Hatteras village has basic services, shops, and food options
- Designated kiteboarding areas with relatively easy parking and beach setup
Lokale Tipps
Hatteras is known for consistent wind and excellent progression conditions; visit during winter months (Oct-Apr) for the most reliable wind and fewer crowds. Check tide and swell forecasts before heading out, as conditions can vary dramatically.
Einstieg & Strand
The ramp allows easy equipment access and launching directly into choppy ocean swells. NNE and SW winds are most consistent; launch when wind is onshore or sideshore to avoid being pushed away from shore.
Lokale Regeln
Respect other water users and stay within designated kiteboarding zones. Be aware of swimmers and fishing activity common in the area, and yield to local riders who know the changing conditions well.
Was anziehen
A 4/3mm or 5/4mm wetsuit is necessary year-round due to Atlantic Ocean temperatures; winter months (Dec-Feb) may require 6mm or booties. Water temps range from 50s°F in winter to mid-70s°F in summer.

Vorfahrt & Verhalten
Spot-Guide
The Experience
You're launching from a concrete ramp directly into the Atlantic. No sand trudging. The Outer Banks throw real ocean swells—rough water that demands solid edge control and chop management. Progress here is real, but it comes with friction.
Wind & Conditions
Hatteras sits in a wind corridor with ~278 rideable days annually. Winter (Oct–Apr) is peak, driven by NNE winds that roll in steady and predictable. SW winds work too if you read swell direction. Wind shifts fast here—thermal activity and frontal passages mean glassy dawn sessions can turn gnarly by mid-morning. Forecast obsessively.
The Water
Strong currents and dynamic tidal swings are real. Shallow water near the ramp creates choppy, unpredictable patterns. Sandbars shift. High tide and low tide feel like different spots. Scout before you commit.
Who It's For
Intermediate kiters who want genuine wind and rough water. You need solid board control in chop and the judgment to bail when conditions exceed your level. This isn't a beginner progression spot. Come to get better at reading the ocean, not for easy conditions.
The Scene
Ramp 27 is organized—parking's manageable, the ramp keeps gear dry, and Hatteras village has supplies. Winter crowds are light. Summer's busier but wind's less consistent. This is a training spot, not a party destination.
