Fehmarn's geography does the work. Westerly and easterly winds funnel straight through the sound—you'll get sessions when the North Sea around you is flat. The tradeoff: this is a working strait. Shipping moves through regularly. Tides run hard. Water stays cold enough that mistakes cost you.

197 windy days annually. October through March is prime; rideable wind shows up in summer too, which is rare for northern Europe. Wind direction clusters around W, WNW, WSW, E, and SW—westerlies dominate, funneled and organized through the sound. Average 12.6 knots, but tidal acceleration and the funnel effect deliver more real wind than forecasts suggest.
The Water
Cold. Winter demands a 5mm wetsuit minimum; 4/3mm by February. Hypothermia risk is real November through March.
Tidal currents are a constraint, not a feature. Incoming tide flattens the surface. Outgoing tide stacks chop and fights harder. You need to time your launch, know your exit, and understand local sandbars—getting pinned or grounded happens here.
Shipping lanes run through. Keep your head up.
Who It's For
Intermediate and above. You need solid water skills, excellent swimming ability, and working knowledge of tide tables. Progression-focused riders stack sessions year-round in consistent wind. Freestylers and racers value the organized funnel wind.
