Lokale Tipps

Castlepoint offers excellent wind consistency with 238+ windy days annually; spring (Sep-Nov) provides optimal conditions. Check local forecasts carefully as wind direction shifts significantly affect rideable conditions at this exposed coastal spot.

Einstieg & Strand

Launch from the beach in NW to NE wind directions for cleanest conditions. Watch for choppy water and shore break; time your entry carefully as ocean conditions can be unpredictable.

Lokale Regeln

Respect other water users including swimmers and fishermen; stay clear of the headland and rocky areas. Yield to anyone already on the water and maintain safe distances.

Was anziehen

Wear a 3/2mm wetsuit year-round; water temperatures range from 12-16°C. Bring a hood or additional layers during winter months (Jun-Aug) for extended sessions.

Spot-Guide

The Experience

Castlepoint is an exposed, unforgiving beach break. Wind funnels hard off the headland, creating gusty, variable conditions that demand constant attention. You're reading water and timing movements around reef hazards the whole session. Not a spot for cruising.

Wind & Conditions

238 windy days annually puts Castlepoint in serious rotation when other breaks are flat. NW to NE winds give you the cleanest launches. SSW and S directions funnel through the headland—gusty and unpredictable. Don't trust the forecast; wind shifts here determine whether you're sending or packing up after ten minutes.

Spring (September–November) is the best window: consistent pressure, fewer of the severe gust spikes that plague summer.

The Water

Rough water. Strong currents wrap the headland; the ocean bed is rocky and reefed. Know your entry point and where the underwater obstacles sit before you launch. Bigger swell days amplify the shore dump and make your exit technical. Current tests edge control and your ability to work back efficiently. Not forgiving.

Who It's For

Intermediate riders with solid edge skills and self-rescue ability. You need to read ocean conditions on the fly and adjust without panic. Beginners train elsewhere first. Experienced kiters will find the wind consistent but the conditions demanding.

The Scene

Small community. Basic cafes locally; Masterton (40 minutes away) has proper accommodation and shops. Parking and beach access exist. Come here for practice in consistent wind and technical water, not the scene.
