Gefahren
- Coral reefs and shallow patches in the lagoon require careful route planning and local knowledge
- Strong currents and tidal flows around the atoll can affect your position and safety
- Limited rescue services on this remote island - always kite with a buddy
Was das für dich heißt
- Riffschuhe bei Ebbe empfohlen
- Starke Strömung — upwind zurücklaufen, nicht abtreiben lassen
- Im Stehbereich auf Finnen und Leinen achten
Ausstattung
- Basic accommodation and food options in Arutanga village on Rarotonga
- Small local shops for supplies, though specialized kite gear may be limited
- Transport ferry service connecting to larger islands for additional resources
Lokale Tipps
Schedule your sessions during peak wind months (Jun-Nov) when conditions are most reliable with 297 windy days annually. Fly to Rarotonga first, then take the inter-island ferry to Aitutaki; bring all essential kite gear as replacements are hard to find.
Einstieg & Strand
The flat water lagoon offers ideal beginner conditions with consistent ESE-E trade winds. Check tide times before launching as shallow areas and coral require awareness of water depth.
Lokale Regeln
Respect local fishing areas and stay aware of other water users in the lagoon. Inform locals of your plans and follow any guidance from island communities.
Was anziehen
A 2mm spring suit or rash guard is sufficient given the tropical location; water temperatures remain warm year-round. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun with UV-blocking gear.

The Experience
Akaiami is one of the smaller motus scattered across Aitutaki's lagoon, and getting here requires a boat transfer from the main island. That extra step filters out the casual visitors, leaving you with an empty sandbar, trade winds, and a lagoon that stretches to the horizon. It's the same water system as Honeymoon Island but with even less company.
Wind & Conditions
Identical trade wind setup to the rest of Aitutaki — ESE to E, cycling in multi-day patterns between 10 and 25 knots. The season is May through October, peaking in August. With 297 windy days on record, the odds are good. The lagoon is wide open here, so the wind arrives clean with no shadowing from the main island.
The Water
Flat, warm, and shallow over sand in the riding zone. Coral patches exist near the motu edges and in the deeper channels between islands — stay aware of where the bottom transitions. No wetsuit needed. The remoteness means no safety boat unless you arrange one through Wet n Wild at Ootu. Tidal flows through the channels between motus can be surprisingly strong; don't let them push you into unfamiliar water.
Who It's For
Confident beginners to intermediates who can self-manage. The conditions are forgiving but the location is remote — if your kite goes down, you're swimming or waiting. Best as a day trip from the main kite base at Honeymoon Island once you've got your legs. Bring water, sunscreen, and everything you need — there's nothing on Akaiami.
